There’s definitely a sense that we’re close, but there’s a big difference between being close and reaching the goal. As a theorist, I’m not conducting experiments. The best I can do is say, “This is the way things are. Are there things that we’re missing? Are there ways that we can interpret the data so that we can learn more than we thought we could?” That’s how the discovery about gravitational waves was finally made, but it took 50 years.
